TANGO MONASTERY
Overview
The Tango Monastery is a Buddhist Monastery located 14 Kilometers towards the north of the capital of Bhutan – Thimphu at an altitude of 2320m above sea level. . The monastery is accessible by the road till the base. The Monastery was founded by Phajo Drugom Zhigpo (1184 -1251) in the 13 th century and built in its present form by Tenzin Rabgay, the 4 th Temporal Ruler of Bhutan in 1688. In 1616, the Tibetan Lama, Zhabdrung Ngewang Namgyal in meditated in the cave at the location of Tango Monastery.
Tango Monastery is one of the most important monasteries in Bhutan. The monastery has probably the some of the earliest wall paintings in Bhutan dating to 17 th century. The paintings on the wall are very exquisite and some of the rarest specimens of the kind in the world.
