Khochung Lhakhang
Overview
Dasho Lam Sangag, in his smyos rabs yang gsal melong stated that Terton Pema Lingpa had seven sons. Amongst the seven, heart son Kuenga Wangpo, was extraordinary elite of the time, unparalleled by anyone thus earning the title Khedup. Starting from his conception into mother’s womb, his parents had a good dreams and he was born with miraculous signs. He was an incarnation of a high Lama of Tibet called Yeshey Bumpa of Kathog institution in Kham region that in turn was an emanation of Dhana Trita and Dramze Gewai Nyingpo of India who excelled in giving and contemplation. Well versed in every aspect – logic, philosophy, metaphysics and carpentry – from the very young age tutored by his father and brother Drakpa Gyalpo, he was designated as the owner of Tantrayana Buddhism that would be spread at the later stage. Adding to that his father gave him the prophecy of where his seat must stand. “To the opposite of Khenpajong, there lays a ridge resembling the trunk of an elephant where you will find a hamlet which would be of immense benefit to you. Go there and work for the good of all beings”, his father prophesized. As prophesized, Khedrup Kuenga Wangpo went towards the present day Zhamling area where he found the ridge described by his father. He according to National Library of Bhutan constructed the lhakhang in 1532 and became his main seat from where Khochung Choeje lineage emerged. The lhakhang was named Rangjung Lhundrupling. Other names given were Rangjung Pemaitshel, Samdrupcholing Ngoegai Zurchong, Dechenling, and Kunzangchoedzong. The stone bathtub and foot print of a horse, pony of Terton Pema Lingpa, can still be found there filled with water especially in the 4th month of the Bhutanese calendar.
